Au museum d’histoires naturelles de NY, des élèves recréent le squelette d’un dinosaure gr ce à l’impression 3D

Durant l’été 2014, des élèves ont utilisé la technologie d’impression 3D pour recréer le squelette d’un dinosaure au Musée américain d’histoire naturelle (AMHN) de New York.

C’était la première fois que le musée utilisait la fabrication numérique comme un moyen de sensibiliser les jeunes aux sciences. Pendant 2 semaines, les élèves ont pu fabriquer des répliques 3D de dinosaures et ainsi apprendre à penser comme les paléontologues.

Les jeunes qui ont participé à cette expérience unique d’apprentissage ne savaient pas quel dinosaure ils devaient reconstituer. Par l’observation des nombreux fossiles du museum, leur photographie, leur comparaison, ils ont du échafauder leurs propres théories sur la créature qu’ils étudiaient.

Un vrai jeu de piste scientifique

Les scientifiques en herbe ont pris entre cinq et six mille photos qu’ils ont retravaillé afin de pouvoir être être transformés en modèles numériques. Ces photos ont été utilisés pour créer les quelque 150 modèles.

Ils ont été accompagné dans leur mission par des paléontologues du museum.

Jordan, étudiant ayant participé au projet, a témoigné de son expérience sur le site 3dprint.com: « cette expérience m’a vraiment appris à comprendre comment les paléontologues peuvent reconstituer et étudier les dinosaures et la manière dont ils doivent faire face à des os désarticulés de différents individus, et des os brisés. ». Un autre étudiant d’ajouter: « Ce projet m’a inspiré et me conduira peut-être même un jour à aller à l’université pour étudier la paléontologie. J’ai toujours pensé que je voulais travailler avec la technologie ou la science, mais maintenant j’ai appris que je peux associer les deux. »

Le programme « Capturing Dinosaurs » a été conçu par le département Education avec le soutien du fabricant d’imprimante 3D, MakerBot.

Le site 3DPB.com a créé un forum au sujet de cette expérience pédagogique.

Une très belle expérience éducative qui prouve le potentiel de l’impression 3D dans la médiation muséale.
