Le 1er novembre 2012, le National Museum of American Indian géré par la Smithsonian Institution a lancé « Vivre au temps des mayas €“ Viviendo el tiempo maya », un site bilingue destiné à la mise en valeur de la culture maya. Cette initiative avait également pour objectif de dissiper la psychose née de la fin du calendrier maya, annoncée ce 21 décembre 2012.

Rudiments du calendrier maya

Les anciens mayas et leur civilisation furent en avance d’un millénaire. Ils sont reconnus pour leurs connaissances en astronomie et en mathématiques, mais également pour l’écriture hiéroglyphe, l’architecture et l’agriculture. Le système unique du calendrier maya fut à la fois une expression scientifique et un héritage culturel. Les mayas utilisèrent leurs connaissances sur le soleil pour calculer exactement la longueur de l’année solaire et pour concevoir de nombreux calendriers des célébrations, de l’agriculture et surtout le plus célèbre d’entre eux, celui du « compte long », synthèse du sacré et du solaire qui s’achève le 21 décembre 2012.

Les objectifs du site

Dissiper les peurs liées à cette fin de calendrier est l’un des objectifs du site « Vivre au temps des mayas » qui entend également expliquer comment les mayas ont utilisé un système de calendrier sophistiqué, basé sur des observations astronomiques pour organiser leur vie en harmonie avec les cycles du cosmos.

Le site, en anglais et espagnol, propose une expérience unique en plaçant la civilisation maya dans un contexte scientifique et mathématique, et rend accessible les pratiques culturelles contemporaines des mayas.

Le site explique les calendriers et l’écriture inventés par les Mayas. Dans la rubrique « resetting the count », Il confronte les pseudos prophéties mayas à la réalité des faits, notamment au travers de témoignages vidéos.

Le site inclut également des activités éducatives pour les collégiens autour des mathématiques et de l’astronomie.

Développé par les équipes du musée et des experts de la civilisation Maya, le site a reçu 64 500 $ en soutien fédéral de la « Latino Initiatives Pool » administrée par le Smithsonian Center Latino.
