Tapisserie de Bayeux : le British Museum multiplie les records et les initiatives

La tapisserie de Bayeux, qui représente l’invasion normande de 1066 par Guillaume le Conquérant et la bataille d’Hastings, sera exposée à la Sainsbury Exhibitions Gallery du British Museum du 10 septembre 2026 à juillet 2027. Cette exposition marquera la première fois en près de mille ans que cette tapisserie de 70 mètres et 50 centimètres de haut sera présentée en Grande-Bretagne. 1 mois avant l’ouverture de l’exposition événement, le British Museum a battu son record de ventes de billets et généré plus de 2,5 millions de £ en 1 jour. Le musée multiplie également les initiatives culturelles à Londres ou dans le Royaume Uni, à destination du grand public ou des scolaires.

Constituée de neuf panneaux de lin reliés entre eux, la tapisserie représente quelque 626 personnages et 202 chevaux au cours de 58 scènes pour une œuvre longue de 70 mètres, large de 50 cm et qui pèse 350 kg.

Au British Museum, la tapisserie sera exposée horizontalement pour la première fois. « Les visiteurs pourront admirer la tapisserie comme jamais auparavant, présentée à plat et en une seule pièce dans une vitrine spécialement conçue », précise le musée.

Elle sera présentée dans une salle très faiblement éclairée et accompagnée d’outils de médiation numérique.

En complément de la tapisserie, l’exposition présentera d’autres oeuvres ou documents, tels que la Charte de Guillaume, le plus ancien document conservé aux Archives de Londres. Datant de 1067, cette charte confirme les droits et privilèges des Londoniens et porte l’un des plus anciens sceaux conservés du règne de Guillaume le Conquérant.

Chaque visiteur n’aura que 40 minutes pour admirer la tapisserie, les objets et les textes qui l’accompagnent. Soit une trentaine de secondes devant chacune des 58 scènes.

La photographie personnelle devrait être autorisée.

La Tapisserie de Bayeux sera l’exposition la plus coûteuse jamais organisée au British Museum.

Bien que les estimations restent confidentielles, elles devraient se situer entre 5 et 10 millions de livres sterling.

L’évènement devrait néanmoins générer un bénéfice pour le musée, notamment grace au mécénat et aux opérations commercales (privatisations et boutiques). L’entrepreneur milliardaire Igor Tulchinsky, né en Biélorussie et installé aux États-Unis, s’est engagé à verser 5 millions de livres sterling en tant que principal mécène.

Le British Museum a généré 2,5 millions de livres sterling le premier jour de la vente de billets en ligne (1er juillet 2026). La demande pour admirer ce chef-d’œuvre médiéval a marqué « la plus importante journée de vente de billets de son histoire », selon un communiqué du musée.

« La demande pour cette exposition exceptionnelle a été sans précédent. La file d’attente en ligne a atteint un pic de plus de 80 000 personnes et le site web du musée a enregistré un trafic 4,7 fois supérieur à sa moyenne quotidienne, avec des centaines de milliers de visiteurs tout au long de la journée », précise le communiqué. Au plus fort de l’affluence, le musée prévenait que le temps d’attente en ligne pouvait atteindre neuf heures.

Le nombre total de billets vendus à ce jour n’a pas encore été confirmé.

La première tranche de billets pour admirer la fragile tapisserie médiévale est désormais épuisée pour la période de septembre à décembre 2026.

D’autres mises en vente auront lieu le 21 octobre 2026 et en janvier 2027, pour des dates comprises entre janvier et mars, et entre avril et juillet 2027 respectivement.

Le prix des billets pour l’exposition de tapisseries est plus élevé que celui des expositions temporaires habituelles du British Museum. Le billet adulte le plus cher coûte 33 £. En dehors des heures de pointe, le tarif standard est de 27 £. 12,50 £ pour les détenteurs du National Art Pass en heures creuses. Les étudiants et les personnes en situation de handicap bénéficient d’un tarif réduit de 25 £ et l’exposition est gratuite pour les moins de 16 ans.

Répondant à certaines critiques, Nicholas Cullinan, le directeur du musée, a déclaré à l’émission Today de BBC Radio 4 que l’exposition était « très coûteuse » pour le musée, « qui est une association caritative, et nous devons donc impérativement rentabiliser ces investissements ».

La Ville de Bayeux a obtenu 1 066 billets gratuits pour permettre à ses habitants de découvrir la tapisserie de Bayeux à Londres.

Le nombre de places fait écho à l’année 1066, date de la bataille d’Hastings racontée par l’œuvre médiévale.

Ces billets gratuits seront mis à disposition des Bayeusains détenteurs d’une carte Ambassadeur. Ils ont été délivré dès le lundi 20 juillet 2026 pour la période de septembre à décembre 2026. 2 autres distributions auront lieu en septembre et décembre 2026. Pour les deux dernières périodes, les Bayeusains auront la primeur avec une ouverture de billetterie anticipée par rapport au grand public.

Cette distribution de billets gratuits s’inscrit dans le cadre d’une convention qui formalise un partenariat scientifique et culturel entre la ville de Bayeux et le British Museum sur le long terme.

« Depuis 1804, Napoléon a lui-même formellement confié le soin de la Tapisserie à la population de Bayeux. Pour continuer d’honorer cet engagement, il nous a paru évident que dans le cadre du prêt de la Tapisserie, les habitants, attachés à leur broderie millénaire, puissent recevoir un traitement de faveur pour aller la voir en Angleterre. Nous avons donc négocié avec le British Museum d’obtenir cette quantité symbolique de 1066 tickets gratuits qui rappelle la date de la Bataille d’Hastings » explique Loïc Jamin, Premier maire-adjoint en charge des musées, du tourisme, de l’attractivité et de la valorisation du patrimoine.

Les programmes liés à la tapisserie destinés aux enfants et aux jeunes comprennent l’entrée gratuite à l’exposition du British Museum pour les moins de 16 ans, ainsi que des créneaux horaires spéciaux pour les écoles, avec un panier-repas gratuit pour chaque écolier fourni par Benugo, partenaire de restauration du musée.

Une expérience numérique en direct, « le plus grand cours d’histoire de l’histoire », sera diffusée dans les écoles du Royaume-Uni le 14 octobre pour commémorer le 960ème anniversaire de la bataille d’Hastings. Cette diffusion est organisée par la British Library en partenariat avec la British Library, English Heritage et le Norwich Museum Service.

Un concours invite les enfants de tout le Royaume-Uni à réimaginer le panneau perdu de la tapisserie de Bayeux. Les classes d’écoles primaires gagnantes recevront un voyage gratuit au British Museum pour admirer la tapisserie, ainsi qu’une visite financée du site de la bataille d’Hastings.

Le concours « Au-delà de la bataille » invite les élèves de CM1 et CM2 (7-11 ans) à concevoir la partie manquante de la tapisserie, que l’on pense incomplète ou perdue. « Au-delà de la bataille invite les élèves à imaginer eux-mêmes ce panneau manquant et à le remplir d’autre chose que d’une scène de conquête », précise le règlement du concours.

Le concours est organisé par l’association artistique franco-britannique Art Explora et English Heritage, l’organisme caritatif en charge du champ de bataille normand et de plus de 400 autres sites historiques en Angleterre. Les écoles participantes recevront des ressources pédagogiques créées par l’artiste brodeuse Jessica Grady. Les classes finalistes se verront offrir une visite financée du site normand d’English Heritage le plus proche. Les œuvres primées seront présentées lors d’une exposition spéciale.

Comment les technologies, les techniques et les artistes du XXIe siècle s’inspirent-ils de la Tapisserie de Bayeux ? Le vendredi 4 décembre 2026, de 17h30 à 20h30, le British Museum propose une soirée spéciale mettant en lumière les différentes manières dont la Tapisserie de Bayeux a été réinterprétée au fil du temps et continue d’inspirer les gens aujourd’hui. 

Le collectif Young Digital Cohort du British Museum, composé de jeunes artistes contemporains, utilisera les technologies émergentes et numériques pour réinterpréter et explorer les thèmes et les récits de la TapisserieLe Scrap Collective, formé par des participants du programme Young Poets du British Museum, présentera des performances établissant des liens entre l’expérience individuelle et le monde de 1066. L’atelier Sow Studio sera présent pour des démonstrations de broderie machine en direct, inspirées des motifs narratifs de la Tapisserie de Bayeux. L’artiste James Morris, de Divyne Crochet apprendra à transformer une image de la Tapisserie de Bayeux ou sa propre image en un diagramme numérique pour réaliser du crochet filet chez soi. Un programme complet d’activités sera bientôt disponible.

Cet événement s’inscrit dans le cadre du programme public soutenant la Tapisserie de Bayeux (10 septembre 2026 – 11 juillet 2027). L’entrée à cet événement sera libre et gratuite entre 17h30 et 20h30. Il est conseillé de réserver un billet gratuit à heure fixe. Les activités sont gratuites, mais les places seront attribuées selon le principe du premier arrivé, premier servi. Cet événement ne comprend pas l’entrée à la Tapisserie de Bayeux.

  • Un documentaire de la BBC

Un documentaire de la BBC figure parmi les nombreux événements et activités prévus à l’occasion de l’arrivée de la tapisserie de Bayeux en Grande-Bretagne. Ce programme télévisé, coproduit par BBC Arts et BBC Specialist Factual, suivra le voyage de la tapisserie jusqu’au Royaume-Uni, offrant un accès aux coulisses et mettant en lumière l’expertise, la préparation et la conservation nécessaires pour rendre ce prêt possible.

L’émission sera diffusée durant l’automne 2026, en parallèle d’une journée spéciale de programmes sur Radio 4 consacrée à la tapisserie.

« La survie de cet objet fragile pendant plus de neuf siècles est miraculeuse, et nous ne pouvions pas manquer l’occasion de permettre à notre public d’admirer de près ses détails exquis alors que la Tapisserie de Bayeux revient en Grande-Bretagne pour la première fois depuis le XIe siècle », a déclaré Suzy Klein, directrice de BBC Arts et de Classical Music TV« Ce film exceptionnel révélera les secrets, les scandales et les histoires qui se cachent derrière l’un des trésors culturels les plus importants du monde médiéval. »

  • Le programme Bayeux Around Britain

Le British Museum souhaite que les activités liées à la Tapisserie de Bayeux soient accessibles en moins d’une heure de route aux deux tiers du Royaume-Uni, tandis que des expériences numériques seront disponibles pour les écoliers du monde entier.

Cet objectif passe par « Bayeux à travers la Grande-Bretagne », un programme de partenariat à l’échelle du Royaume-Uni qui verra plus de 60 organisations partenaires, dont des musées, des bibliothèques, des archives, des cathédrales et des sites patrimoniaux, organiser des expositions et des événements pour souligner l’importance de la tapisserie.

« Depuis l’annonce de ce prêt l’an dernier, nous nous sommes engagés à en faire un moment culturel important pour l’ensemble du Royaume-Uni », a déclaré Nicholas Cullinan, directeur du musée. « Le programme Bayeux Around Britain contribuera à faire en sorte que cette exposition exceptionnelle ne se limite pas à Bloomsbury, mais soit accessible à des dizaines de millions de personnes à travers le pays. »

La tapisserie devrait être restituée à Bayeux fin juillet 2027. Elle sera ensuite conservée au sein du musée de la Tapisserie de Bayeux rénové, en vue de sa réouverture en octobre 2027, à temps pour célébrer le 1000e anniversaire de la naissance de Guillaume le Conquérant en 2028.
