Le Walters Museum apporte le 10 000 ème document à  la Bibliothèque numérique mondiale

La Bibliothèque numérique mondiale pilotée par la Bibliothèque du Congrès vient d’accueillir dans ses rayons électroniques le 10 000 document, un des manuscrits anciens du Walters Art Museum de Baltimore.

Le jeudi 7 mars, la Bibliothèque numérique mondiale (World Digital Library) annonçait qu’elle détenait désormais plus de 10 000 manuscrits numérisés, cartes, livres, gravures, photographies, films, enregistrements sonores et autres documents culturels, soit au total plus de 500 000 images.

Cette collection virtuelle est un projet collaboratif qui associe 102 institutions dans 46 pays différents.

Les dernières contributions apportées par le Walters Museum comprennent un manuscrit des évangiles datant du 16ème siècle retrouvé en Ethiopie, un calendrier de l’église grecque du 11ème siècle  et un manuscrit contenant un fragment des évangiles qui aurait été rédigé dans un monastère allemand au 10ème siècle.

The Walters Art Museum, l’un des contributeurs de la bibliothèque numérique, a utilisé une subvention de la Fondation Nationale des Sciences humaines pour numériser sa très riche collection de manuscrits.

Depuis une décennie, le Walters a été à  la pointe pour fournir un accès gratuit aux images de ses vastes collections.

Le directeur exécutif du musée Julia Marciari-Alexander a déclaré dans un communiqué que la participation dans la Bibliothèque numérique mondiale « est un excellent moyen de rendre certains de nos trésors les plus importants disponibles aux côtés de ceux des autres grands musées, des bibliothèques et des archives à  travers le monde. »

La Bibliothèque numérique mondiale, créée en 2009 par la Librairie du Congrès américain, met à  disposition sur Internet, gratuitement et en 7 langues dont le français, une documentation considérable en provenance des pays et des cultures du monde entier. Les documents sont classés par  Lieu,  Période,  Thème,  Type d’élément  et  Institution.

Les principaux objectifs de la Bibliothèque numérique mondiale sont  les suivants :

  • Promouvoir l’entente internationale et interculturelle ;
  • Développer la diversité des contenus culturels sur Internet ;
  • Fournir des ressources pour les éducateurs, les chercheurs et le grand public ;
  • Donner les moyens aux établissements partenaires de réduire les fractures numériques au sein des pays et entre pays.
