MUSEE & CULTURE MONDE

Pablo Rodriguez-Fraile is moving places. It is not that he does not like his current Miami house. It is more that he needs a place where he can best enjoy his art collection. €œThe new home is going to have 15 or 16 screens all around, and projectors, € Rodriguez-Fraile, a 33-year-old Spaniard with a background in finance, says. That is because his collection consists not of sculptures, paintings or etchings, but of non-fungible tokens €“ or NFTs €“ unique cryptographic files that collectors regard as proofs of ownership of digital art pieces like videos, gifs, or computer-designed images.  […]

€œConvergence Station, € the company’s third installation, may be good business. But is it good art?  Meow Wolf trades on the dark side of American popular culture, in cults and conspiracies, in supernatural beings, extraterrestrials and unsolvable conundrums. The  chain of oversized, immersive art installations  teases visitors who wander through its dimly-lit environments by dropping hints about nefarious mysteries they could spend a lifetime €” not to mention multiple $45 admission charges €” trying to work out.  […]

Recent high-profile sales of artworks presented as non-fungible tokens offer the promise of fast money. But experts warn that speculation and ignorance are fueling increasingly risky bets   […]

The New York Times  routinely devotes at least one omnibus Arts & Leisure or special section annually to museums, which is only natural considering the number of world-class archives and collections the city has. In his €œCritic’s Notebook € feature for the last such special section (May 21, 2021), which  reported  developments in museums from Philadelphia to Los Angeles, Jason Farago addressed what emerges as the central concern of  Under Discussion: The Encyclopedic Museum, a compilation of edited interviews with museum directors, curators, and other contemporary thinkers and scholars produced under the auspices of the Getty Research Institute, and edited by Donatien Grau, a French scholar and critic who is currently the curator of contemporary programs at the Musée d’Orsay.  […]

The idea that making and experiencing art can be therapeutic pervades contemporary culture, so it is no surprise that museums are responding to the collective trauma of Covid-19 by addressing concerns of mental and physical health with unprecedented intensity. The past sixteen months have witnessed a profusion of museum-based healing initiatives.  […]

To The Delight Of  art lovers around the country, this autumn promises to be much livelier than last, with scores more museums fully open and long-delayed exhibits finally unfurled. But as coronavirus cases tick back up and restrictions tighten in some cities, elbowing your way through a crowded gallery at one of the country’s major art institutions appeals far less than it used to.   […]

There are nearly 40 Impressionist-ish installations across the U.S., thanks to €œEmily in Paris. € Do the exhibitions live up to the hype?  […]

After centuries of introducing audiences to history’s greatest works, museums €”new and old €”are leveraging 5G technology to add sci-fi €“like levels of fun to exhibits and reimagine the role they’ll play in the future.  […]

The Metropolitan Museum of Art will sell 219 prints and photographs to help plug a $150 million revenue shortfall resulting from the pandemic.  […]

Hi there! I’m Pip, and as I’m writing this, the sun is setting on my last day as a UX Designer at ACMI (I’m off for a new adventure).  It’s been an absolute journey and I’ve shed quite a few tears over leaving. As my time has come to an end, I’ve had the opportunity to reflect on what types of projects a UX Designer does in a museum.  […]

A Grand Museum of the Internet €“ an institution dedicated to preserving and elevating the artifacts of the defining culture-maker of our time €“ would just make the web even less about its users, and even more homogenizing and exclusionary  […]

In 2019, my business partner and I attended a €œvirtual reality meal € at James Beard House. At the time, we wrote it off as a novelty. While these kinds of events offered innovative one-off experiences, it wasn’t yet clear how emerging technologies would add consistent value to the wider arts industry. Mass adaptation felt a long way off..[…]

The first new museum will be a smaller version of the Saudi Arabian Museum of Contemporary Art in Ad Diriyah district.   […]

Late last month, one of China’s best-known private art institutions, the UCCA Center for Contemporary Art, announced it would open a new branch in the southwestern city of Chengdu. The  move  is just the latest step in UCCA’s ambitious domestic expansion.  […]
