Avec le thème Readymade, Tumblr se rêve en réseau social de l’art

Le 25 septembre 2013, Tumblr, l’agence de communication spécialisée dans l’art et l’agence interactive Pixel Union ont annoncé qu’ils unissaient leurs forces pour créer et commercialiser une extension du réseau social Tumblr dédiée au secteur de l’art.

Baptisé €œReadymade €, ce thème a été spécialement imaginé et développé pour les musées, galeries et fondations culturelles. €œReadymade € permet à ses utilisateurs d’utilisé des outils spécifiques et de personnaliser leur page afin de présenter de manière adaptée leurs expositions, artistes et créations.

Avant son lancement et afin d’affiner son développement, l’outil a été utilisé par plusieurs institutions muséales et culturelles américaines: Los Angeles County Museum of Art / Lacma, ForYourArt Foundation, Lehmann Maupin Gallery, MoMA PS11, Paul Kasmin Gallery, et Philadelphia Museum of Art.

Comme l’explique la responsable des relations avec l’art de Tumblr, Annie Werner: €œNous voulions avoir des partenaires nous accompagnant pour le développement en testant le thème. Nous avons choisi des lieux qui utilisent déjà Tumblr et d’autres non. Nous avons déjà reçu de nombreux retours de nos institutions testeuses. La plupart d’entre elles souhaitait un design simple et propre valorisant leurs contenus. Ils ne voulaient pas d’un look trop flashy ».

Suzi Kenna, responsable des médias sociaux chez Fitz & co, a de son côté raconté l’histoire de cette création: « J’ai regardé et analysé des centaines de sites tumblr d’institutions culturelles. et j’ai étudié comment elles l’utilisaient. Par une présence sur Tumblr, l’institution culturelle peut raconter des histoires différentes et transformer une présence web statique en une conversation interactive avec des millions de membres de la communauté des arts ».

Les 3 partenaires ont travaillé ensemble pendant presqu’une année mais consacré uniquement 6 mois au développement technique du thème. Résultat: une présentation qui privilégie les images et les vidéos, un thème minimaliste mais ergonomiquement simple et intuitif.

Ses développeurs estiment que « Readymade » pourrait même remplacer tout ou partie du site web d’un lieu culturel. La page Tumblr du LACMA, utilisant « Readymade », propose ainsi des rubriques habituelles sur le site d’un musée, « exposition actuelle », « à propos », ‘Collection ».

Quant au nom du thème, c’est une référence affirmée à l’artiste Duchamp. Comme le justifie Annie Werner: « Nous avons voulu choisir un nom qui puisse résonner dans la communauté artistique et distinguer clairement ce thème des autres thèmes ».

Parmi les 1,250 themes créés depuis la naissance de Tumblr en 2007, €œReadymade € est le premier dédié à un secteur professionnel.

Avec cette initiative, Tumblr espère devenir le réseau social de l’art et concurrencer ainsi d’autres plateformes comme flickr, pinterest ou instagram.

Tumblr mécène artistique

En avril 2013, Tumblr et Rhizome ont lancé un programme de mécénat en faveur des jeunes artistes.

Les deux partenaires ont eu l’idée de ce programme après le succès de l’exposition Moving the Still (qui réunissait 8 artistes spécialisés dans les animations GIF) présentée dans le cadre d’Art Basel Miami.

Tumblr et Rhizome, le département media du New Museum vont ainsi soutenir 3 projets artistiques utilisant le web et les autres outils numériques. Les premiers projets ont été choisis en juillet 2013. Chaque artiste a reçu de 1 000 à 5 000 $ US et devra finaliser sa création avant la fin 2013.

6 ans après sa création, Tumblr est aujourd’hui utilisé par 130.5 millions d’internautes, dont la moitié ont moins de 25 ans.
