10 ans après sa création, facebook reste incontestablement le réseau social le plus puissant de la planète. Malgré ses détracteurs et la désertion des plus jeunes, le réseau créé par par une bande de copains dans une chambre de l’université de Harvard revendique 1.23 milliard d’utilisateurs dans le monde et est fréquenté chaque jour par plus de 550 millions d’utilisateurs. Une arme sans rival qui est logiquement devenue un outil pour les musées et autres lieux culturels.

A la fin décembre 2013, facebook comptait 1.23 milliard d’utilisateurs dans le Monde. 556 millions d’utilisateurs se connectent chaque jour sur Facebook dans le monde. Ce chiffre est en hausse de 49% sur un an et prouve, si besoin est, que la côte du site est encore intacte alors que beaucoup prédisent sa fin prochaine.

Plus de 750 millions de personnes se connectent au service tous les jours. 81 % des utilisateurs sont situés hors Etats-Unis et Canada.

31,1% des 35-54 ans utilisent Facebook aux Etats-Unis, selon une étude d’iStrategyLabs publiée le 15 janvier dernier. Cette tranche est la plus présente sur le réseau, devant les 25-34 ans (24,4%) et les 18-24 ans (23,3%). Les 13-17 ans ne représentent que 5,4% de la population. Selon iStrategyLabs, Facebook aurait perdu 3 millions de jeunes en 3 ans. Ils étaient 9,8 millions en 2014 contre 13,1 millions en 2011. La même étude a calculé qu’en trois ans, le nombre de membres américains de Facebook dans la tranche d’ ge 13-17 ans avait diminué de 3 millions (-25%), tandis que ceux de plus de 55 ans augmentait de 12,5 millions (+80%). Pour la société d’analyse, «la perte de fréquentation par les adolescents est plus que compensée par le gain de fréquentation et d’engagement par des gens plus gés ». Le cabinet de recherche Trefis a aussi jugé dans une note que le vieillissement des membres de Facebook pourrait être positif pour ses revenus, les usagers plus gés ayant aussi plus de pouvoir d’achat. Les jeunes désertent Facebook, mais les séniors arrivent en masse

Selon la plus récente étude du Pew Research Center, 57% des adultes américains et 73% des 12 – 17 ans utilisent Facebook. Son utilisation chez les adultes est même en croissance: 64% des utilisateurs de Facebook visitent le site sur une base quotidienne, contre 51% des utilisateurs en 2010. à‰tude: 73% des adolescents américains utilisent encore Facebook

Aux Etats-Unis, facebook reste également l’application la plus utilisée sur Android et iOS combinés, avec plus de 103 millions de visiteurs uniques chaque mois, en hausse de 27% en un an.

Sans surprise, au début de l’année 2014, selon les statistiques du site Museum Analytics, les musées américains et londoniens sont les plus suivis sur facebook. Le Museum of Modern Art de New York occupe le premier rang avec 1 5 20 579 likes sur sa page Facebook. Une institution française, le Musée du Louvre, remporte la médaille d’argent avec 1 150 312 millions de likes. La suprématie américaine sur facebook est moins évidente que sur Twitter. Dans le top 20, on retrouve par exemple des musées hors du territoire américain: le Museum of Islamic Art de Doha au Quatar (6ème), l’Acropolis Museum d’Athènes (10ème), le Centre Pompidou (11ème), le Prado de Madrid (13ème), et le musée Frida Kahlo au Mexique (15ème).
