Google Commémore la fin de la Seconde Guerre mondiale avec les affiches de la Smithsonian Institution

Une image vaut-elle vraiment 1000 mots? L’histoire répond oui, car les affiches politiques aident à façonner les visions du monde et à éduquer le public sur le passé et le présent. En ce jour commémorant le 75e anniversaire de la fin de la Seconde Guerre mondiale, le 2 septembre 2020, Google Arts & Culture a publié en ligne plus de 15 000 affiches issues des collections du Smithsonian National Museum of American History.

Les internautes et mobinautes du monde entier ont maintenant accès à des affiches récemment numérisées en haute résolution qui offrent un regard unique sur l’histoire américaine, allant du recrutement des infirmières de la Croix – Rouge lors de la Première Guerre mondiale aux affiches emblématiques de Rosie la Riveteuse pendant la seconde guette mondiale issues de la collection d’affiches du Smithsonian National Museum of American History Archives Center Princeton University.

« En tant que l’une des plus grandes collections d’affiches politiques et de guerre américaines couvrant plus de 100 ans, celles-ci soutiendront une meilleure compréhension de la politique, de la propagande et de la protestation, ainsi que de l’histoire des techniques graphiques et artistiques » explique Robert Horton, directeur assistant pour les Collections and Archives, Smithsonian Institution, National Museum of American History.

Ce projet collaboratif a duré 18 mois, du début de la numérisation à la publication.

La mise en ligne des affiches s’accompagne de la producion de plus de 20 expositions virtuelles, des « histoires incroyables réalisées par le personnel du musée ». Des explorations sur l’utilisation de motifs comme le drapeau américain dans les affiches du XXe siècle ou les figures de la Liberté et de la Victoire dans la propagande française, aux examens de la manière dont les affiches ont aidé à construire les rôles de genre et à configurer la masculinité, ces expositions thématiques « fournissent un aperçu et un contexte d’expert sur les rôles essentiels. les affiches ont joué à travers l’histoire ».

Nouveau projet collaboratif de quatre musées Smithsonian

Les collections d’affiches sont lancées parallèlement à un nouveau projet collaboratif de quatre musées Smithsonian, World War II: The Flying Frontier, qui présente une plongée en profondeur dans le rôle clé joué par l’aviation pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale.

Rassemblant plus de 40 histoires sélectionnées à partir des ressources des collections Smithsonian couvrant des moments historiques, des avions, des pilotes et des affiches, y compris des panoramas 3D de cockpits d’avion historiques du Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum, une commémoration de la vie du Tuskegee Airman Lt. James L.
