Les londoniens invités à adopter une plante de la serre du Barbican avant sa fermeture pour transformation

Les Londoniens sont invités à emporter une bouture ou une plante de la célèbre serre du Barbican avant sa fermeture et le début de sa rénovation totale, prévues pour début 2027. Plus de 2 000 boutures issues de la collection renommée de plantes du Conservatoiore botanique du Barbican seront disponibles à l’adoption lors de 4 événements organisés en collaboration avec Wayward Plants, une initiative pionnière de réutilisation des plantes. 

Ce programme d’adoption précède d’importants travaux qui permettront de rénover les infrastructures vieillissantes, d’introduire des systèmes durables et de réaménager entièrement l’intérieur des seres du Barbican afin d’offrir un accès à tous et des conditions de croissance optimales pour les plantes.

Le « plus bel espace éco-brutaliste de Londres » sera ouvert tous les jours à partir de 2030. 

Monstera à feuilles géantes, ficus brillant et tradescantia aux teintes pourpres et vertes figurent parmi les espèces qui seront présentées et proposées pour adoption au centre de réutilisation de Wayward Plants.

4 séances sont prévues entre le mercredi 19 août et le 29 novembre 2026. L’inscription préalable est obligatoire.

Le premier événement d’adoption a eu lieu le mercredi 19 août, de 12h à 17h, et s’est déroulé à guichet fermé.

Les inscriptions sont ouvertes pour les deux autres événements publics prévus les 13 septembre et 2 décembre 2026.

Le 29 novembre 2026, les membres de Young Barbican seront également invités à parrainer une plante.

Les visiteurs sont encouragés à faire un don lors de la réservation de leur billet gratuit et à emporter une bouture afin de contribuer de manière essentielle à la restauration de la serre du Barbican.

Lors de chaque événement, les visiteurs auront l’occasion d’explorer l’espace, de découvrir la collection unique et de s’informer sur les projets futurs.

D’autres ouvertures publiques gratuites, visites guidées spéciales et événements artistiques seront organisées avant la fermeture le 31 décembre 2026, et annoncées prochainement. 

Marta Lowcewicz, jardinière en chef du Barbican, a déclaré : « Je travaille au Conservatoire depuis seize ans et j’ai soigné nombre de ces plantes depuis leurs semis. C’est donc très important pour moi et mon équipe de savoir que tant d’entre elles trouveront leur place dans des foyers. Gérer un espace qui n’était pas vraiment conçu pour répondre aux besoins des plantes n’a pas toujours été chose facile. C’est pourquoi je suis enthousiaste pour la suite : créer le meilleur environnement possible pour que la collection s’épanouisse, tout en l’ouvrant à un public plus large. »

Les séances d’adoption sont organisées avec Wayward Plants, une initiative pionnière de réutilisation des plantes. 

Wayward Plants (plantes rebelles) a été fondée il y a 20 ans par Wayward, une agence de design et d’aménagement urbain primée, reconnue pour son rôle pionnier dans la création d’« espaces transitoires », transformant des terrains urbains vacants et des sites à usage transitoire en espaces verts design et culturellement dynamiques.

En prévision de la grande restauration du Conservatoire, Wayward Plants a prélevé avec soin des milliers de boutures provenant d’une grande variété de spécimens et les propage dans son centre de réutilisation pour obtenir de nouvelles plantes destinées à être adoptées.

Les plantes de la serre servent de guide au processus d’adoption. Chaque visiteur peut y découvrir les différents types de spécimens et apprendre à les entretenir, visiter les plantes d’origine dont les boutures ont été prélevées et emporter une plante pour continuer à la cultiver chez soi.

Heather Ring, cofondatrice et directrice de Wayward Plants, a ajouté : « Le Barbican occupe une place très particulière dans l’histoire de Wayward Plants. Notre premier événement d’adoption de plantes à Londres s’y est déroulé en 2009, dans le cadre de l’exposition Radical Nature. C’est donc un moment très significatif pour nous d’y revenir près de vingt ans plus tard pour notre programme de multiplication et d’adoption le plus ambitieux à ce jour. Cette collaboration arrive à un moment charnière pour nous, avec le lancement du Wayward Plants Reuse Centre et l’expansion significative de notre action. En collaboration avec l’équipe horticole du Barbican, nous multiplions des milliers de boutures issues de cette collection extraordinaire, créant ainsi un héritage vivant pour la serre et offrant aux Londoniens la possibilité d’en prendre soin chez eux. »

Aménagée dans les années 1980 sur le toit du Barbican Theatre, autour de sa tour de scène de 30 mètres, cette serre à plusieurs étages est devenue l’un des jardins intérieurs les plus remarquables de Londres.

Elle abrite 800 espèces de plantes, entretenues avec soin et expertise par l’équipe horticole du Barbican.

Après quatre décennies, les systèmes d’étanchéité, de chauffage, de vitrage et d’irrigation, vieillissants, nécessitent tous d’être remplacés. De plus, les allées et les escaliers étroits font qu’actuellement, seulement 30 % environ de la serre est entièrement accessible.

Et elle n’est ouverte au public que quelques fois par mois

En 2030, la Serre deviendra un espace gratuit et ouvert tous les jours.

L’accès sans marche, les allées élargies et un nouvel ascenseur rendront l’espace entièrement accessible, tandis que des mesures environnementales plus durables réduiront la consommation d’énergie et protégeront la collection pour les décennies à venir.

Pour ce faire, la Serre sera vidée afin que les architectes Allies and Morrison et les ingénieurs Buro Happold puissent procéder à sa réfection et à sa modernisation.

Toutes les plantes doivent être retirées de la serre afin qu’elle puisse être entièrement réimperméabilisée, vitrée et réaménagée, protégeant ainsi le théâtre Barbican situé en dessous.

En plus de multiplier les plantes par bouturage, certaines plantes seront conservées entières pour être replantées dans l’espace réaménagé, tandis que d’autres seront données à d’autres organisations et projets communautaires.

Le cabinet d’architectes paysagistes Harris Bugg Studio, primé à de nombreuses reprises, collaborera avec l’équipe horticole du Barbican pour créer un nouveau plan de plantation alliant plantes existantes et nouvelles espèces soigneusement sélectionnées, tout en préservant le caractère unique de la Serre.

La docteure Philippa Simpson, directrice générale du Barbican, a déclaré : « La serre du Barbican est l’un des espaces les plus exceptionnels du pays et n’a cessé d’évoluer depuis son ouverture. Cette nouvelle étape vise à créer un environnement plus sain pour les plantes et à permettre à un plus grand nombre de personnes de profiter de ce lieu et des activités qui y seront proposées. Chaque bouture est le début d’une nouvelle aventure, et tandis que des milliers de plantes prennent racine à travers Londres, nous posons les fondements d’une serre plus verte, plus résistante et plus accueillante que jamais. »

La transformation des serres s’inscrit dans le cadre du programme de rénovation du Barbican, un investissement majeur pour l’avenir du Centre qui permettra de revitaliser les Foyers et la terrasse du lac entre 2025 et 2030.

La City of London Corporation a engagé 191 millions de livres sterling sur les 231 millions nécessaires pour achever la phase 2025-2030 du programme.

« Des soutiens philanthropiques et des partenariats supplémentaires sont recherchés afin de garantir la pleine réalisation des ambitions artistiques et civiques du programme » indique l’institution.   

Le Barbican continuera d’accueillir partiellement le public pendant toute la durée des travaux.

Pendant un an, à partir de juin 2028, le Centre déploiera sa programmation au-delà de ses murs avec une saison ambitieuse de spectacles, d’expositions et d’événements à travers Londres, dont le programme sera dévoilé début 2027.
