Lancée en 2017, l’application TikTok compte à  ce jour plus d’un milliard d’utilisateurs dans le monde (dont 38,09% ont entre 13 et 17 ans), plus de  13 millions de clip vidéo sont postés chaque jour sur la plateforme. La crise du covid-19 ainsi que les différents mouvements sociaux de 2020 tels que le mouvement Black Lives Matter et la mort de George Floyd n’ont cessé d’accroà®tre la popularité de ce nouveau réseau social.

TikTok est une application media, disponible sur iOS et Android, permettant de créer et partager des petites vidéos.

Née en Chine en septembre 2016 sous le nom de Douyin, elle est adaptée aux marchés occidentaux en 2017 par ByteDance.

TikTok et Douyin fonctionnent avec le même logiciel mais conservent des réseaux indépendants, afin de respecter les restrictions de la censure chinoise.    TikTok est accessible dans le monde entier sur l’Apple Store et Google Play.

Fin 2017, la maison mère de TikTok, ByteDance, a acheté musical.ly. Cette fusion a permis à  TikTok d’accéder à  plusieurs marchés occidentaux, dont la France, jusque là  tenus par musical.ly.

Une croissance mondiale exponentielle

la plateforme compte  800 millions d’utilisateurs actifs  dans le monde (Datareportal 2020). Elle se situ donc en 9ème position dans le classement des réseaux sociaux par nombre d’utilisateurs, derrière facebook, twitter ou instagram, mais devant les plateformes sociales  LinkedIn, Twitter, Pinterest et  Snapchat.

TikTok est très populaire dans de nombreux pays asiatiques, tels que le Cambodge, le Japon, l’Indonésie, la Malaisie, la Thaà¯lande et le Vietnam. Il a fallu 6 ans à  Instagram pour atteindre le même niveau d’utilisateurs actifs que TikTok a dépassé en moins de 3 ans et 4 ans pour Facebook.

TikTok est de loin l’application la plus téléchargée ces dernières années. Elle a dépassé les 2 milliards de téléchargement sur l’Apple Store et sur Google Play en 2020.  L’appli avait déjà  atteint son premier milliard en février 2019 et atteint un demi-million supplémentaire en moins de 8 mois.  

Le réseau social est aujourd’hui utilisé par 21,9 % des internautes français entre 16 et 64 ans (we are social et Hootsuite, 2021).

Fin décembre 2020, on estimait à  11 millions le nombre d’utilisateurs français chaque mois,  contre 4,4 millions en juin 2019. Ils passent en moyenne un peu  plus d’une heure par jour sur l’application.

Pendant le confinement, l’application a connu, chez les 15-24 ans en France, une hausse de 27% d’utilisation  par rapport à  2019. Entre mars et mai, c’est la  4ème marque la plus citée  sur les autres réseaux sociaux (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram) tous secteurs confondus.

Selon une étude menée par  HypeAuditor, la France est à  la  9ème place en terme de nombre d’influenceurs TikTok  (comptes avec plus de 1000 abonnés). 1,22% des influenceurs TikTok sont français. L’influenceuse française la plus populaire compte 12,3 millions d’abonnés.
