La National Portrait Gallery propose une expérience métavers dans ses murs

Du 23 février au 7 mars 2026, les visiteurs de la National Portrait Gallery de Londres ont pu découvrir une nouvelle façon d’interagir avec les objets de la collection grâce à une expérience de réalité virtuelle éphémère, créée en collaboration avec l’Université de Glasgow dans le cadre de leur projet Museums in the Metaverse (MiM).

Le projet Museums in the Metaverse et la National Portrait Gallery de Londres ont donc invité les visiteurs à explorer une sélection d’environnements de réalité virtuelle, d’un sentier forestier à un univers désertique onirique.

Chaque expérience intégrait des modèles 3D de très haute qualité, représentant différentes œuvres de la Collection, dont beaucoup sont rarement exposées.

Pour des raisons de conservation, certains de ces objets sont habituellement conservés sous verre. Cette expérience offrait aux visiteurs la possibilité de les manipuler et de les examiner virtuellement, leur proposant une toute nouvelle façon d’appréhender les œuvres de près, tandis que la lumière révèlait tous les détails.

Parmi les œuvres « exposées » figuraient un buste en terre cuite de Mary Seacole, un buste en plomb de Virginia Woolf et une tasse représentant le roi Henri VIII et ses six épouses.

L’expérience se déroulait grace à la [un]box, une borne de réalité virtuelle autonome créée par l’Université de Glasgow.

La National Portrait Gallery (NPG) est l’un des premiers musées du pays à accueillir cette initiative, accessible gratuitement à tous les âges, tous les jours du 23 février au 8 mars, de 10h30 à 13h00 et de 14h00 à 17h30.

Soutenu par le programme Innovation Accelerator du gouvernement britannique, le MiM développe ses collections numériques et déploie des bornes interactives un

dans les sites culturels du pays.

Le projet MiM entend enrichir l’expérience muséale en levant certains des principaux obstacles à l’accès (qu’ils soient physiques, géographiques, liés à la conservation ou économiques) et en invitant un public international à explorer les collections de manière inédite.
