Avec l’ouverture de son centre de réserves et de recherche, le British Museum franchit une première étape de son plan de développement

Le 7 juin 2024, le nouveau centre de stockage et de recherche du British Museum a ouvert officiellement ses portes après le transfert d’objets du site de Blythe House. Cette inauguration officielle marquait la première phase du plan directeur du musée britannique pour les années 2024-2028.

  • Les objets déplacés de Londres à  Shinfield dans le Berkshire

En 2023, le musée a commencé à  déplacer des objets de son entrepôt de Blythe House vers les nouveaux espaces de réserves de 15 000 m2.

Basé à  Shinfield dans le Berkshire, près de Reading, le centre de recherche et de stockage est situé en face du Thames Valley Science Park de l’Université de Reading.

Conçu par les architectes John McAslan + Partners, le centre sera géré en partenariat avec l’Université de Reading.

  • Réserves et lieu de recherche ouvert au public

Le BM_ARC est le premier b timent spécialement conçu pour permettre l’étude et la comparaison des collections du monde antique, et c’est le premier b timent complètement indépendant créé pour le musée national de Londres depuis la construction néoclassique de Sir Robert Smirke, achevée à  Bloomsbury en 1852.

Lors du lancement du projet, l’établissement culturel avait déclaré que le centre abritera des objets de toutes les époques et de toutes les régions, comme par exemple des clous provenant de l’enterrement du navire Sutton Hoo, des tissus péruviens rares et des empreintes digitales anciennes conservées sur des pics en bois de cerf vieux de 5 000 ans.

Le nouvel espace a été conçu pour servir à  la fois de lieu de stockage du musée et de centre de recherche et d’étude pour les universitaires mais également le public, qui pourra le visiter sur rendez-vous.

  • Un plan directeur au financement contesté  

La nouvelle installation des réserves du British Museum sera en partie financée par le partenariat pluriannuel que le musée a conclu avec le groupe pétrolier britannique BP, qui fournit 50 millions de livres sterling sur 10 ans pour soutenir son plan directeur. Ce soutien financier est très critiqué depuis qu’il a été rendu public

Le plan directeur se poursuit d’ici 2028.  Il prévoit également la refonte de plus d’un tiers de l’espace de la galerie du musée, soit 7 500 m ². Début mai 2024, le musée a d’ailleurs lancé un concours international d’architecture pour la refonte de ces espaces.
