MUSEE & CULTURE MONDE

For millions of children, being dragged to a museum is a singularly painful experience, marked by time standing still rather than history coming to life €“ as it does in the film €œNight at the Museum €, starring Ben Stiller. (article)

Yesterday, the Metropolitan Museum of Art launched €œThe Met Unframed, € an augmented reality phone experience extending its treasures to your smartphone screen.

The initiative is a partnership with Verizon, the telecommunications giant that, as the €œMet Unframed €  press release helpfully reminds us, €œgenerated revenues of $131.9 billion in 2019. €

Good to know. (article)

Today I’ve spent my morning exploring Egypt. I started with a tour of the tomb of Menna, a farm overseer who lived over 3,500 years ago in Luxor’s West Bank. After that I nipped over to Alexandria to visit the 4-7th Century BCE Roman ruins, before rounding out my tour in a 14th Century mosque in Cairo. (article)

These are reactions from visitors to the Chicago Fire Cyclorama, who, in 1892, were captivated by the sensation of standing in the center of a rotunda, surrounded on all sides by a detailed  painting of a burning city. Perched atop slowly spinning platforms, audiences got a 360-degree view and a narrated tour of the already historic 1871 Chicago Fire. (article)

The Smithsonian’s eye-popping  $2 billion expansion plan was supposed to propel the institution into the 21st century. Complete with an ambitious expansion of its 19th-century red administration building, the Castle, that would have added dining, retail and restrooms, and new National Mall-facing entrances to the National Museum of African Art and Arthur M. Sackler Gallery, the concept designs for its south campus were unveiled with great fanfare in 2014. (article)

Life without art and museums is just a whole lot of Netflix and cheap lager, that’s what self-isolation has taught me. Good heavens, I miss museums. The smell, the light, the people, the ART. I really miss art. But it’s good to know that way before everything went crazy last year, most of London’s museums digitised their collections and even created virtual tours of their spaces. (article)

Let’s be honest: Generally, the disconnect of 2020 has proven that the arts and culture industry does not (yet) have a digital strategy. Articles herald memes on  TikTok from the Uffizi Gallery,  Spotify playlists at the Tate  or the art world’s  virtual viewing rooms as bastions of digital pioneering. But how much of this innovation has been strategic? How much thinking is behind what is being built? (article)

(article)

OTTAWA €” The federal government is promising to provide financial aid to Canada’s only Second World War museum in Europe, which has been battered by COVID-19. Following months of discussions, Veterans Affairs Minister Lawrence MacAulay announced on Thursday that Ottawa will provide up to $500,000 over the next two years to cover some of the Juno Beach Centre’s expenses and help it weather the pandemic. (article)

While the West continues to grapple with its colonial past, institutions from Togo to Cairo are creating more expansive models to celebrate art. Most museums as we know them seem to exist in order to help us in some way see ourselves and the world better. (article)

Susana Smith Bautista MA ’00, PhD ’12, a lecturer in the School of Communication at the USC Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism and interim deputy director of the USC Pacific Asia Museum in Pasadena, Calif., is the author of a new book about the changing roles of museums. (article)

Museum doors may be shut for the time being, but that doesn’t mean that culture has ground to a halt. Faced with the pandemic, and in the absence of visitors, museums and cultural institutions have turned to technology to reinvent their roles and missions digitally. Welcome to Episode 9 of the ETX Studio €œAfter Calendar € of incoming trends for 2021. (article)

One of the headliners of the New York Philharmonic’s fall gala last month was Leonard Bernstein, leading his old orchestra in the overture to €œCandide. € Yes, Bernstein died three decades ago. But since the gala, like so much else, was forced to go remote, the Philharmonic had some fun with the format, filming its current players performing to historical footage of Bernstein wielding his baton. (article)

In his new book  The Future of the Museum: 28 Dialogues, published in November and available worldwide in January, the writer, researcher, and arts consultant  Andrà¡s Szà¡ntà³ interviews the world’s leading museum directors and curators about the trials they faced in 2020 and how they see art institutions evolving in the years to come. (article)

Technology allowed us to enjoy things we didn’t know we could during COVID-19. But a computer screen simply cannot capture certain activities and experiences, says Christian Barker. SINGAPORE: When travel screeched to a halt early this year, companies trading internationally quickly adjusted to holding meetings or discussions via Zoom and similar tech tools. (article)

MUSEE & CULTURE FRANCE

French museums signed a partnership with TikTok in order to widen their popular base among the app’s users, mostly teens, a report by AFP said. (article)

Christophe Leribault, directeur du musée du Petit Palais à  Paris, déprogramme, reprogramme, depuis huit mois, ses expositions. (article)

(article)
