Né en France, aux Baux de Provence en 1977 avec la Cathédrale d’Images (devenue Carrières des Lumières), le concept d’art immersif a donné naissance à  des lieux dédiés à  cette nouvelle forme d’expérience. Le phénomène s’est fortement développé avec l’ouverture en 2018 de l’Atelier des Lumières à  Paris et de teamLab Borderless à  Tokyo. En moins de 6 années, plus de 90 espaces permanents d’art immersif ont ouvert ou sont sur le point d’ouvrir dans 58 villes et 20 pays. Deux pays abritent le plus grand nombre d’espaces, Etats-Unis et France, avec respectivement 40 et 4 lieux ouverts ou sur le point d’ouvrir. New York et Las Vegas sont les villes qui en accueillent le plus grand nombre, 4 d’ici la fin de l’année 2023. A eux seuls, 9 opérateurs (Artechouse, Culturespaces, d’strict, Grande Experiences, Lighthouse Immersive, Meow Wolf, Superblue, teamLab et WNDR) exploitent déjà  55 des 90 lieux culturels recensés ci-dessous, dont 17 sous la seule marque Lighthouse Artspace et 9 sous celle des Lumières (Culturespaces) et de teamLab.

Le studio Coréen d’strict annonce son implantation à  Los Angeles (Santa Monica) à  l’automne 2023, après Las Vegas au printemps 2023.
