Le Musée de Nouvelle-Calédonie met en ligne progressivement sa collection numérisée

Depuis le 6 mars 2018, une partie des collections du Musée de Nouvelle-Calédonie est consultable en ligne. Ce catalogue virtuel, qui sera progressivement enrichi, permet aux internautes du monde entier de découvrir les trésors historiques de l’à®le.

Le Musée de Nouvelle-Calédonie s’est lancé dans une politique de numérisation de ses collections en vue de les rendre accessibles à tous.

373 pièces majeures sont aujourd’hui consultables sur la plateforme du Musée. D’ici la fin de l’année, l’ensemble des collections sera numérisé.

Une collection de longue date

Lancée en 1863 par le gouvernement colonial, pour regrouper un ensemble d’objets censés représenter la Nouvelle-Calédonie aux expositions universelles, la collection du Musée répertorie aujourd’hui plus de 8 500 objets et plus d’un millier d’oeuvres prêtées par des particuliers.

Les collections du Musée sont répertoriées selon quatre thèmes ; ethnographie, histoire, iconographie et histoire naturelle.

Mais c’est la collection Kanak qui fait la fierté du Musée. Regroupant plus de 2 000 objets, dont beaucoup de statues, elle demeure l’une des plus riches au monde.

Un catalogue en ligne des collections

Depuis mars 2018, le Musée propose un catalogue de ses collections consultable en ligne. Pour l’heure, 10% des collections ont été numérisés mais le Musée annonce vouloir rendre accessible la totalité d’ici la fin de l’année.

La numérisation relève d’une volonté de préservation des collections d’une part, mais a aussi pour vocation la diffusion de la culture calédonienne.

« Le lancement de cet outil était très attendu par les enseignants, notamment pour l’enseignement de la culture kanak, et ce, conformément au projet éducatif de la Nouvelle-Calédonie », explique Marianne Tissandier, responsable des collections.

Le catalogue en ligne dispose d’un moteur de recherche en fonction de plusieurs critères tels que l’époque, l’auteur, le sujet ou encore le lieu, facilitant ainsi l’accessibilité. Chaque photo est accompagnée d’une fiche descriptive de l’objet et de renseignements sur son utilisation.
