Le Centre Pompidou créé un Comité d’art numérique pour soutenir les acquisitions d’oeuvres

Le 24 septembre 2026, le Centre Pompidou a annoncé la création d’un « Comité Art Numérique » pour une durée de cinq ans (2026-2031). Ce dispositif a vocation à rassembler des mécènes français et internationaux « qui souhaitent accompagner l’institution dans son engagement sur l’art numérique et contribuer à son rayonnement dans ce domaine ».

Ce comité vise à financer l’acquisition d’œuvres destinées à la collection du Centre Pompidou-Musée national d’art moderne, soutenir la politique de valorisation et de diffusion de l’art numérique (publications, programmes de recherches, expositions), ou encore accompagner des opérations de conservation des œuvres.

« L’innovation tient à la mobilisation collective de collectionneurs et d’acteurs de la scène numérique pour accompagner l’enrichissement des collections du Centre Pompidou. Complémentaire du soutien existant des Amis du Centre Pompidou, ce comité portera une attention particulière aux œuvres créées et inscrites sur la blockchain, dites « onchain », ainsi qu’aux nouvelles formes d’art génératif «  explique le Centre Pompidou.

Les mécènes fondateurs du Comité Art Numérique sont Ismail Tazi (Directeur d’Art Blocks Inc et fondateur de Trame) et Benjamin Gross (déjà membre du Digital Art Selection Committee du Whitney Museum of American Art de New York).

  • 50 ans de regards sur la création numérique

Cette initiative s’inscrit dans la continuité de l’histoire du Centre Pompidou qui s’est toujours intéressé aux formes de création assistées par ordinateur.

L’institution s’est ainsi dotée, en 1975, d’un laboratoire informatique – l’Atelier de Recherches en Techniques Avancées (A.R.T.A) – destiné aux artistes visuels comme au grand public.

Elle a également joué, par le biais de l’Ircam, un rôle déterminant dans le développement de l’informatique musicale.

En 2023, le Centre Pompidou est devenu le premier musée d’art moderne et contemporain à faire l’acquisition d’un ensemble d’œuvres liées à la blockchain, domaine dans lequel l’institution continue à être active. Récemment, des œuvres de Robert Alice sont entrées en collection, Rhea Myers et Anna Ridler.

  • Quand la réalité virtuelle entre dans la collection

En l’espace de quelques années, la collection nouveaux médias du Centre Pompidou a également acquis ses premières œuvres utilisant la réalité virtuelle (Hayoun Kwon, Jeanne Suspuglas) et la réalité augmentée (Hito Steyerl), avec le soutien notamment des Amis du Centre Pompidou.

Elle a par ailleurs mené une réflexion pluriannuelle autour de l’intelligence artificielle dans le cadre d’un partenariat avec KADIST, qui a conduit à plusieurs acquisitions dans ce champ (Éric Baudelaire, Holly Herndon et Mat Dryhurst, etc.).

Le Centre Pompidou mène dans le même temps une activité de recherche sur les premières décennies de la création par ordinateur, permettant l’entrée en collection d’œuvres des années 1960 à 1990, soutenue également par les Amis du Centre Pompidou.

  • Trois expositions récentes mettent les nouvelles technologies à l’honneur

Trois expositions, réalisées dans le cadre du programme  Constellation, permettent de rendre compte de cet aspect de la collection :

– « Computer Worlds » ( du 24 septembre 2026 au 14 février 2027), au Centre Pompidou X West Bund Museum de Shanghai.

Cette exposition collective, entièrement conçue à partir de la collection du Centre Pompidou, au croisement des disciplines artistiques, met en lumière les œuvres pionnières des fondateur·ices de l’art informatique tout en dévoilant les créations contemporaines les plus prospectives.

– « Unstable Media in the 21st Century » (du 20 novembre 2026 au 2 mai 2027), à la Kunsthalle de Hambourg.

Autour d’une quarantaine d’œuvres, l’exposition, invite à découvrir les évolutions récentes de ce champ de la création artistique à travers une grande diversité de formes, de gestes et de situations. Le co-commissariat entre Marcella Lista (Centre Pompidou) et Corinne Dieserns (Hamburger Kunsthalle) explore comment les artistes s’approprient les médias de leur temps et réinventent continuellement les récits de l’image et du son, jusqu’à leur devenir non linéaire, grâce à la programmation informatique et la circulation en réseau.

– Exposition en ligne « Nos chimères sont-elles ce qui nous ressemble le mieux? » (du 14 septembre au 13 décembre 2026), dans le cadre du partenariat avec KADIST.

L’exposition en ligne réunit dix artistes d’aujourd’hui qui interrogent la présence des grands modèles de langage (LLM) et des systèmes d’IA générative comme des chimères
contemporaines — des hybrides monstrueux assemblés à partir de milliards de traces humaines, d’archives recomposées, et la froide mathématique de l’identification et de la prédiction des formes. « Nos chimères sont-elles ce qui nous ressemble le mieux ? ».

  • Trois questions sur l’art numérique

– Que recouvre le terme « d’art numérique » ?

L’appellation ne fait pas l’objet d’une définition fixe, mais regroupe généralement l’ensemble des pratiques artistiques reposant sur l’usage des technologies informatiques. Historiquement, celles-ci se développent à partir des années 1960, quand artistes et ingénieurs s’essaient aux premiers dessins contrôlés par ordinateur. L’apparition dans les décennies suivantes de l’ordinateur personnel, puis du CD-ROM et d’internet, conduiront de nouvelles générations d’artistes à se saisir de ces outils. Plus récemment, les domaines des NFT, de l’intelligence artificielle, de la réalité virtuelle ou augmentée, ont constitué d’importants domaines d’exploration dans ce champ.

– Quelle est la place de l’art numérique dans le paysage artistique actuel ?

Les technologies du numérique occupant une place considérable dans nos vies sociales, économiques et politiques, l’intérêt pour un regard artistique sur celles-ci est allé croissant ces dernières décennies. Sans généraliser, il est aujourd’hui possible de constater à la fois l’existence de scènes spécialisées, développant des recherches de pointe sur des questions spécifiques (blockchain, art génératif, etc.), et une porosité forte de ces enjeux au sein du champ des arts plastiques pris dans son ensemble.

La multiplication d’expositions récentes sur le sujet, par des institutions généralistes de premier plan, aux côtés du Centre Pompidou, comme le LACMA, la Tate Modern ou le Whitney Museum, témoigne de cette visibilité accrue.

– Pourquoi ce dispositif représente-t-il une initiative innovante pour l’écosystème de l’art numérique ?
