L’organisation ECP publie son premier rapport sur la consommation carbone des institutions culturelles américaines

Environment and Culture Partners (ECP), l’organisation américaine à  but non lucratif dédiée à  la mobilisation environnementale du secteur culturel, a publié le rapport complet et les fiches d’information de son étude menée auprès de plus de 130 institutions culturelles des Etats Unis. Cette analyse complète de la consommation d’énergie du secteur culturel « Culture Over Carbon: Understanding Museums’ Energy Use (2021-2023) est disponible gratuitement en ligne.

Le projet d’inventaire carbone est le premier effort global visant à  calculer l’empreinte carbone du secteur culturel américain et à  établir une référence pour le secteur.

« Trop peu d’institutions culturelles estiment avoir les ressources nécessaires pour évaluer et mieux gérer leur consommation d’énergie », estime l’organisation Environment and Culture Partners (ECP). « Pourtant, la nécessité de suivre ces informations est essentielle pour élaborer et conduire les politiques environnementales en matière de b timent à  venir ou existant ».

ECP estime que « si toutes les institutions culturelles aux à‰tats-Unis réduisaient leur consommation d’énergie de 20 %, la réduction annuelle estimée des émissions de carbone et autres émissions de GES équivaudrait à  l’équivalent des émissions annuelles de deux centrales électriques au gaz ou à  la consommation carbone d’environ 180 000 voitures individuelles. »

Le rapport complet « Culture Over Carbon », les recommandations à  l’intention des institutions culturelles et les fiches d’information sur les codes et politiques sont destinées à  aider les organisations culturelles à  mesurer et à  gérer leur consommation d’énergie. Tous ces documents sont disponibles en téléchargement sur le site Internet de l’ECP.

« Comprendre l’ampleur des émissions totales du secteur culturel est important pour définir l’ampleur du changement nécessaire, attirer des financements pour les changements et rendre compte du succès des efforts déjà  entrepris », explique ECP.

Partenaire du projet,  New Buildings Institute (NBI) a collecté et évalué les données énergétiques fournies par plus de 130 institutions participantes, des zoos et aquariums, des jardins, des sites historiques et cinq types de musées.

L’analyse a été réalisée à  l’aide de l’outil logiciel FirstView ® pour comprendre la performance énergétique des plus de 240 b timents de l’étude.  

« Les données et analyses quantitatives sur la consommation énergétique fournissent des informations essentielles pour faire progresser les efforts d’efficacité énergétique des lieux culturels. Des données qualitatives, y compris les discussions avec les participants sur leurs démarches et initiatives ont complété l’analyse énergétique afin de responsabiliser les institutions culturelles dans leurs prochaines étapes » explique ECP.

Gr ce aux données du rapport « Culture Over Carbon », le New Buildings Institute, Environment & Culture Partners et l’Environmental Protection Agency s’associent désormais pour une enquête visant à  créer un outil d’évaluation des performances énergétiques des b timents de musée « Energy Star Portfolio Manager ».

Le programme « Culture Over Carbon » est financé par une subvention nationale de près de 600 000 $ apportée par l’Institut américain des services de musées et de bibliothèques (IMLS). La New England Museum Association, le New Buildings Institute et Environment & Culture Partners sont partenaires du projet.

Le programme, qui s’est achevé à  l’été 2023, a permis de créer la première analyse approfondie de la consommation d’énergie du secteur culturel, de produire des « feuilles de route » pour aider le secteur à  utiliser l’énergie de manière plus efficace et d’établir une estimation de l’empreinte carbone énergétique du secteur culturel américain. La Frankenthaler Climate Initiative (FCI) vient d’annoncer l’extension de son budget.  Cette initiative est le principal programme national privé américain de subventions aux institutions axées sur le développement durable des arts visuels et l’éducation artistique. Elle est financée par la Fondation Helen Frankenthaler et mise en œuvre en partenariat avec RMI et Environment & Culture Partners.

Le 9 aoà»t 2023, la Fondation a annoncé qu’elle augmenterait le financement de FCI de 50%, en la faisant passer de 10 millions à  15 millions de dollars jusqu’en 2025. En 2023, FCI a déjà  accordé 2,7 millions de dollars en subventions à  48 organisations  .
